Men's Basketball Suffers Overtime Loss at Marietta to Close out First Half of OAC Play

Box Score

MARIETTA, Ohio—The Mount Union men's basketball team fell in overtime to Marietta, 80-78, snapping a three-game winning streak Wednesday evening. The loss puts the Purple Raiders at 7-9 overall and 3-6 in Ohio Athletic Conference play through the first half of their conference schedule.

A potential game-winning three-pointer by senior Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) missed the mark in the game's closing seconds. Marietta outscored the Raiders, 8-6, in the decisive overtime period. The Pioneers scored the opening three points of the period and led by as many much as four with 33 seconds remaining. Sophomore T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/St. John's) converted a pair of free throws with 16 seconds to play to cut the deficit to two.

Mount Union scored the first nine points of the game before Marietta responded with a 21-6 run of their own. The Raiders would end the half on a 14-7 run to take a 29-28 lead at halftime.

The Pioneers opened the second stanza with and 11-3 surge, but the Raiders would fight back to regain the lead on a Keith Williams (Louisville, Ky./Brown) basket with 12:07 to play. A pair of Kevin Knab free throws tied the game with 37 seconds remaining. Wood's three-point attempt did not fall at the buzzer, sending the game into the extra session.

Wood and freshman Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) led the way for the Raiders with 17 points apiece and combined for eight three-pointers. Gillespie, who scored four of the Raiders' six points in overtime, contributed 14 points off the bench.

Marietta (10-6, 5-4) was led by Kevin Knab, who scored 14 of his game-high 24 points from the charity stripe and grabbed seven rebounds. Conner Kilpatrick (11 points) and Jason Humphrey (10 points) were also in double-digits for the Pioneers.

Four Purple Raiders fouled out of the game and the host Pioneers enjoyed a 45-19 advantage from the free throw line.

Mount Union continues its three-game road trip when it travels to Otterbein on Saturday for a 7:30 pm tip-off.
