Men's Hoops Falls to Unbeaten Lycoming (Pa.) in Basinger Memorial Title Game

Box Score

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Host Lycoming' s high-powered offense proved to be too much as the Mount Union men's basketball team fell to the host Warriors, 91-75, in the championship game of the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament.

The Purple Raiders (4-8) fell behind early, 10-3, but three-pointers by Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) and Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) on four of the next five possessions gave them a 15-12 lead. Lycoming responded with a 12-0 run of its own to take a 24-15 lead, which they would not relinquish. Despite making 10-of-20 three-point attempts and outrebounding the Warriors by nine in the first half, the Raiders trailed 48-36 at halftime.

Lycoming led by as many as 23 points in the second half, but Mount Union rallied to cut the deficit to 10 on fast break layup by Keith Williams (Louisville, Ky./Brown) with 3:55 to play. That is as close as the Raiders would get, however, as the Warriors scored the final six points of the game.

The Raiders had a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring in double-figures. Wood finished the game with 16 points and five rebounds on his way to earning all-tournament team honors.

Jacubec had one of the best performances of his young collegiate career, matching his career-high with 17 points, including four three-pointers. The freshman also had five rebounds and five assists. Fellow freshman Clayton Patton (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) also posted a career-high with 10 points to go with a team-best three steals.

Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson), T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/St. John's), and Williams provided a spark off the bench for Mount Union. Griffin went for 10 points, all in the first half, and six rebounds while Gillespie scored 14 points. Although he only scored three points, Williams found several ways to impact the game, finishing with four rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Point guard Jerald Williams took over the game despite only three field goal attempts. The nation's leader in assists, Williams dropped 13 dimes to go with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists to be named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The playmaking ability of Williams led to open shots for his teammates, as Lycoming made 11-of-19 three-point attempts and shot 60.4-percent from the field overall.

Anthony Martin scored 18 first-half points on eight-of-eight shooting and finished with 22 points to lead the way for Lycoming. Patrick Dougher also had a hot hand, making five-of-seven three-pointers on his way to 17 points. Mike Bradley added 16 points and Kevin Anthony grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Warriors.

Dougher joined Williams on the all-tournament team as the host Warriors improved to 12-0 on the season.

Mount Union returns to action at Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest at 3 pm on Saturday. The Raiders will play 13 conference games to finish the season. They went 4-3 in games against non-conference foes, all from the state of Pennsylvania.
