ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule by defeating Westminster (Pa.), 8-1, at Peterson Fieldhouse on Friday. The Purple Raiders have won three straight matches dating back to a pair of victories in the fall.
The Purple Raiders (3-1) swept singles competition and took two of three doubles points in their victory over the Titans.
Nate Fockler (North Canton/Hoover) won the No. 1 singles match over Nathan Huber, 6-4, 6-2, while younger brother Nick Fockler (North Canton/Hoover) defeated Drew Trifelos, 6-2, 6-1, at second singles. The duo also teamed to earn an 8-3 win in first singles over Huber and Brad Thomas.
Other singles victors were Patrick Yackmack (Mantua/Twinsburg), Ben Swope (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), and Drew LeGendre (Toledo/Bowsher), and Jeff Looker (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls).
Yackmack handled Sean Black, 6-1, 6-3, at third singles; Swope defeated Thomas, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 singles; LeGendre outlasted Ryan Carr at fifth singles, 6-3, 3-6, 13-11; and Looker bested Mark Andino, 6-1, 6-1, at sixth singles.
Swope and Yackmack teamed for an 8-2 second singles victory over Trifelos and Black.
Mount Union will return to action next Wednesday against Oberlin at Peterson Fieldhouse before heading to Hilton Head, S.C. for a week of competition during spring break.
