Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio – Sophomore Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) scored a team-high 21 point as Mount Union men's basketball completed the season sweep of John Carroll with a 83-74 victory in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday evening in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
With the win, Mount Union has now won two-straight games and improves to 8-10 overall and 6-5 in the OAC, while John Carroll falls to 8-9 and 5-6 in the conference.
This was the first time the Purple Raiders have swept the Blue Streaks since the 2000-01 season.
Freshman Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) had 18 points and Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) tied a career-high with four three-pointers in the game for 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Raiders.
Kyle Hubbard had a team-high 21 points to lead the Blue Streaks.
The Blue Streaks came out of the gates quickly, as they would start the game on a 15-0 run.
The Raiders would answer with an 11-0 run, as Scelza would hit his second three-pointer in a row at the 12:26 mark of the first half, to cut the Blue Streaks lead to four , to make the score 15-11.
At the 13:27 mark, the Blue Streaks leading scorer Kyle Hubbard would pick up his second foul of the half, and would sit for the remainder of the first period.
At the 3:28 mark of the first half, the Purple Raiders leading scorer Jacubec would pick up his third foul and would sit for the rest of the half.
Junior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/St. John's) would score his fifth straight point as he scored a layup to tie the game at 38.
Senior Matt Kiger (Williamstown, W. Va./Williamstown) scored a layup with seven seconds left in the first half, as he gave the Raiders their first lead of the game at 40-38, and the Raiders would take a two point lead with them into the locker room.
Hubbard made two free-throws with 18:46 to go in the game to tie the game at 40 for the Blue Streaks.
Jacubec hit two straight three-pointers with 15:29 to go in the game to give the Raiders an eight point lead at 54-46.
Gillespie hit a big three-pointer with 10:01 remaining in the second half as the shot clock was expiring to give the Raiders an eight point lead at 63-55.
Jacubec gave the Raiders their biggest lead of the game, 14 points as he hit a three-pointer on the fast break with 6:17 reminaing in the game to make the score 75-51.
Wallack would cut the Raiders lead to five with 3:45 remaining in the game, as he hit his third three-pointer of the game to make the score 75-70.
The Raiders would go 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the last 40 seconds and would go on for the 83-74 victory.
Mount Union will be back in action when it hosts Capital Saturday at 4:00 pm, which will be the second game of a double-header with the Mount Union women facing Capital at 2:00 pm. Newspaper Box Score
