Volleyball Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament; Blanks Carnegie Mellon in First Round Thursday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Mount Union's women's volleyball team, ranked No. 9 in the nation, defeated Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament on Thursday evening in the Van Noord Arena at Calvin (Mich.) College.

The Purple Raiders improve to 31-4 as the Tartans fall to 25-10. Mount Union advances to the second round of the tournament for the third straight year.

Mount Union defeated Carnegie Mellon 25-20, 25-23 and 25-21 to take the match in three straight sets. The Raiders were led by junior Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) who recorded 13 kills and eight digs in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Juniors Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) and Brittany Woodard (Diamond/Southeast) each dished out double-digit assists as Schleich tallied 13 and Woodard had 12.

Freshman Allison Twining (Perrysburg/Findlay) added eight kills and 10 digs to the victory. Junior Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) notched 17 digs in the win. Junior Sara Brown (Willoughby/Willoughby South) and Snyder led the team in blocks with four as sophomore Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) and senior Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) each recorded three blocks on the night.

Mount Union returns to the court tomorrow as they take on the winner of No. 1 Calvin and No. 8 Penn State-Behrend at 7:00 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena on the campus of Calvin College.
