Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Mount Union's women's volleyball team, ranked No. 9 in the nation, dropped a five set thriller to No. 1 Calvin (Mich.) in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament Friday, November 15 in Van Noord Arena.
The Purple Raiders finish the season with a overall record of 31-5 which marks the most wins in a season for the team. Calvin improves to 31-1 on the season and advances to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. against Wittenberg.
After Mount Union dropped the first set 25-11, the Raiders stormed back to take the second set 25-23. The Knights took the third set 25-20 as Mount Union went on in the fourth set 25-23 to force a fifth set. Mount Union jumped out to a 3-1 lead before Calvin knocked off the Raiders going on a 14-5 run to end the match, 3-2.
The Raiders were led by junior Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) who notched her 10th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs. Senior Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) recorded 18 kills to lead the team offensively.
Junior Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) notched 28 kills as junior Brittany Woodard (Diamond/Southeast) tallied 17. Schleich recorded her third double-double of the season with her 28 kills combining with 12 digs. Freshman Allison Twining (Perrysburg/Findlay) had 10 digs as junior Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) led the team defensively with 35 digs.
Sophomore Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) tallied five blocks on the night as sophomore Mary Tout (North Royalton/North Royalton) notched four.
Maggie Kamp led the Knights offensively with 24 kills and 13 digs as Emily Crowe had 11 kills. Megan Rietema notched her first career triple-double with 11 kills, 16 digs and 46 assists. Kristen Zietse recorded 33 digs to lead Calvin.
The 2013 Raiders were the fourth team to advance to the NCAA Tournament and first in school history to bring home both the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title and the OAC Tournament title in the same year.
