Men's Basketball Defeats Pitt.-Greensburg For Season Opener Saturday

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Mount Union's men's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a 99-73 victory over Pitt.-Greensburg on Saturday, November 16 at Chambers Hall.

The Purple Raiders' (1-0) freshman Jeff Foreman (Mentor/Mentor) led the team in scoring as he put up 17 points in his Raider debut. Senior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/St. John's) chipped in 16 points as junior Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) recorded 15 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Raiders. Heinle Brian led the way for the Bobcats with game-high 20 points as teammate Contristano Rocco added 18 and Figueroa Jerell finished out the double-digit scorers for Pitt-Greensburg (0-1) with 14.

Shannon Jarrett hit the first shot of the night as the Bobcats took a 3-0 lead. The game would go back and forth as the Bobcats would lead by as many as six points before Mount Union would come out of the first half with a 20 point lead, 57-37, Foreman scored all 17 of his points in the first half. 

The Bobcats would open the second half on a 14-2 run to cut the Mount Union lead to eight points, 59-51, with 15:10 remaining in the game. The Raiders would go out to the 97-70 lead with three minutes to go as Jacubec would score 13 points in 12 minutes. The 27 point margin would be the largest of the night for the Raiders before Mount Union would go on for the 99-73 victory as freshman Tyler Sherman (Norton/Norton) would make the game's final bucket with 43 ticks left on the clock.

The Raiders shot 41.8 percent (38-of-91) from the field with 30.6 percent (11-of-36) from beyond the arch and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free-throw line. The Bobcats shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the field with 24 percent (6-of-25) three pointers and 68 percent (17-of-25) from the charity stripe. 

Mount Union remains on the road when they travel to Bethany, W.Va. Tuesday, November 19 as they take on the Bethany Bison for an 8:00 p.m. tipoff.
