Dillon Leads Men's Basketball Over John Carroll in Conference and Home Opener

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated John Carroll 113-100 Wednesday, December 4 in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball matchup at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in a record setting game by sophomore Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls).

Dillon scored a new career-high 35 points, on 13-for-17 shooting from the field as he led the Purple Raiders (3-2, 1-0 OAC) to a 13 point victory over the Blue Streaks (4-1, 0-1 OAC). Dillon tied a Mount Union individual game record with eight made three-pointers as he went eight-for-11 beyond the arc. Mount Union shot a season best 57.5-percent from the field (42-of-73) with 47.1-percent from three-point land (16-of-34).

Senior Jimmy Darnley (Canton/GlenOak) recorded his first career double-double with 11 points a career-high 10 rebounds. Dillon and Darnley were two of five Raiders in double figures as sophomores Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) added 15 and 13, respectively as senior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/Toledo St. Johns) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.

The Blue Streaks were led by David Linane who scored game-high 26 points as teammate Danny Wallack notched 24 points. David Hendrickson finished out the double-digit scorers for John Carroll with 13 points.

The two teams exchanged buckets in the early minutes with two ties and five lead changes before John Carroll opened up to a 13-8 lead at the 16:46 mark. The Raiders answered with a 16-6 run capped by a Dillon three-pointer, as he scored 12 of his 18 first half points in a 1:40 period, to bring the score to a Mount Union lead 24-19 with 12:14 left in the half. The Blue Streaks would outscore the Raiders 34-23 in the remaining 12 minutes going into the locker room with a six point advantage, 53-47.

Mount Union came out of the locker room and started the second half with a 14-3 run to take the lead 61-56 from a Gillespie layup with 15:36 remaining in the game. John Carroll would blank the Raiders for the next minute to tie the game at 61 with 14:49 to go. Over the next five minutes, the score would be tied once before Mount Union jumped out to a 10 point lead from a 19-9 run to the 9:39 mark, 80-70.

After a 30 second John Carroll timeout, the Blue Streaks went on a 10-3 run to get within three points, 83-80. Mount Union would continue to bring the baskets as they answered the 10-3 run from the Blue Streaks with a 17-9 run of their own to reach 100 points with 4:49 remaining. The Purple Raiders would go on for the 113-100 victory as John Carroll scored the last seven points of the game.

Mount Union returns to the court Saturday, December 7 at 3:00 p.m. as they take on Heidelberg in Tiffin, Ohio for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup.
