Men's Basketball Wins Over Heidelberg in Tiffin Saturday

TIFFIN, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Heidelberg Saturday, December 7 in an Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball matchup at the Seiberling Gymnasium.

The Purple Raiders improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the OAC as the Berg falls to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the OAC. Mount Union was led by sophomore Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) who recorded a double-double with game-highs 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Ruffin was one of four Raiders in double figures joined by senior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/Toledo St. Johns) who scored 13 points, sophomore Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) had 12 points and senior Jimmy Darnley (Canton/GlenOak) chipped in 11.

The Student Princes were led by Jackson Blue who had a team-high 14 points as he was one of three players in double-digits as Deonte Holder scored 13 points and Frank Longhino had 10.

The Berg jumped out to a 9-2 lead with 16:11 on the clock in the first half before getting up to the 14-7 lead at the 14:21 mark. Mount Union would answer with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 14 points with 12:31 remaining.

The Raiders would take their first lead, 18-16 at 10:36, before the Student Princes went on a 15-6 run over the next four and a half minutes to the 31-24 lead with 6:07 to go. Mount Union would outscore the Berg 16-9 to take the three point lead into the half, 43-40.

The game would remain close in the first five minutes as Heidelberg had the slight scoring advantage, 10-7, in the second half, as it was tied 50-50 with 14:53 to go in the game. Heidelberg reached the largest lead of the half for either team with a six point lead at the 2:42 mark from a Blue layup, 71-65. Scelza would cut the lead in half with a three-pointer at the 2:20 mark, 71-68, before two Ruffin free-throws would bring the game to within one point, 71-70 the Berg.

Mount Union took the one point lead, 72-71, as junior Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) found Gillespie for the layup. The Purple Raiders would go on for the 74-71 victory as Jacubec hit the games last two free-throws.

Mount Union returns to the gymnasium Saturday, December 14 when they host Otterbein in an OAC men's basketball matchup in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex on campus.
