ALLIANCE, Ohio - - The number four seed Mount Union men's tennis team defeated the number five seed John Carroll 5-2 in an Ohio Athletic Conference quarterfinal match Tuesday afternoon at the Whitehill Tennis Courts.
This is the first time since the 2009-10 season Mount Union has advanced to the conference tournament semifinals.
With the win, the Purple Raiders improve to 15-5 while John Carroll ends its season with a 5-13 record.
The Raiders won two singles matches and three doubles matches on their way to the 5-2 victory.
Ben Swope (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) recorded two wins on the afternoon for the Raiders as he defeated Eric Grimaldi 6-2, 6-3 in the no. 5 singles match and was paired with Josh Duerr (Uniontown/Lake) as they defeated Paul Olexa and Sawyer Dina 8-6 in the no. 3 doubles match.
Patrick Yackmack (Mantua/Twinsburg) secured the match for the Raiders with the team's fifth point as he defeated Peter Nemes 6-3, 6-1 in the no. 4 singles match
Mount Union advances to the OAC tournament semifinals in Mason, Ohio where it will face the no. 1 seed Ohio Northern Friday at 1:00 p.m.
