Box Score 2 CORTLAND, N.Y. – No. 11 Mount Union volleyball team picked up two wins in the opening weekend of the 2013 season at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic hosted by No. 24 SUNY Cortland. The Purple Raiders defeated Buffalo (N.Y.) State 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-13) and beat No. 23 Clarkson (N.Y.) 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 17-15) Friday evening.

Senior Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) led the Raiders with 19 kills as junior Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) chipped in with 15 kills. Junior Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverfield) led Mount Union with 27 assists in the win with junior Brittany Woodard (Diamond/Southeast) recording 23 assists. The Raiders junior, Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville), recorded 38 digs to lead all Raiders in digs for the win over Clarkson.
Mount Union defeated Clarkson in thriller five set match. Clarkson had the 2-1 lead after three before Mount Union came back to tie it 2-2. In the fifth set, tied 7-7, the Raiders built a 14-9 lead before Clarkson fought back to come within two, 14-12.
Mount Union had Clarkson on the ropes before a 15-12 decision of "in" was overruled and the score was quickly 14-13 with Clarkson to have the serve. The Golden Knights took the lead 15-14 before the Raiders won three straight points to take the set and match over the No. 23 Clarkson Golden Knights.
Webb made the go ahead kill for Mount Union to put the Raiders up 16-15 before an attack error by Clarkson ended the match.
No. 11 Mount Union 3 - vs – Buffalo 0 (MTU 25-BUF 17, MTU 25-BUF 11, MTU 25-BUF 13)
The Raiders were led offensively by Snyder who tallied nine kills. Webb and sophomores Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) and Mary Tout (North Royalton/North Royalton) each chipped in with five kills in the win against Buffalo.
Schleich recorded 16 assists to lead the Raiders as Woodard had 10 assists. Mount Union received 21 digs from Mastroine against Buffalo. Berger led the Raiders in blocks with two solo blocks and two assist blocks.
No. 11 Mount Union is back in action tomorrow morning as they take on host No. 24 SUNY Cortland at 11:00 am and take on Richard Stockton (N.J.) at 1:30 pm in Cortland, New York.
