No. 11 Volleyball Remains Perfect After Opening Weekend; Defeated No. 24 SUNY Cortland 3-2 and Richard Stockton 3-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – No. 11 Mount Union volleyball picked up two more wins to remain perfect after the first weekend of play. The Purple Raiders went 4-0 at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic hosted by No. 24 SUNY Cortland as they defeated Cortland 3-2 (19-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-13, 15-6) and Richard Stockton (N.J.) 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-23) Saturday afternoon.

Senior Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) was selected to the All-Tournament team at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.

Mount Union tied Juniata (Pa.) College for overall record at the classic, 4-0, and were both first appearances for each team. The Raiders finished the tournament in second due to a tie breaker. The tie breaker was who had the fewest sets played between Juniata and Mount Union. Juniata had 14 and the Raiders had 16 sets.

Mount Union junior Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) led the Raiders in kills with 12 as Webb recorded 11 kills in the win over Cortland. Juniors Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverfield) and Brittany Woodard (Diamond/Southeast) led Mount Union in assists as Schleich had 22 and Woodard had 10.

The Raiders junior Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) recorded 24 digs as sophomore Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) had two solo blocks as well as three block assists in the 3-2 win for Mount Union.

No. 11 Mount Union 3 – vs – Richard Stockton 0 (MTU 25 –RS 19, MTU 25 –RS 12, MTU 25 –RS 23)

Berger led all Raiders in kills with seven as Snyder and Webb each tallied six kills in the 3-0 win over Richard Stockton. Schleich and Woodard recorded 14 and 10 assists respectively.

Raider's Mastroine had 11 digs as junior Sara Brown (Willoughby/Willoughby South) had three solo blocks.

No. 11 Mount Union (4-0) returns to the court Friday, September 6 against Hartwick (N.Y.) at 2 pm and Fredonia (N.Y.) at 6 pm in the Nazareth Golden Flyer Tournament in Rochester, N.Y.
