ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union senior Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) became the 11th player in Mount Union history to record 1,000 career kills as the Mount Union volleyball team, ranked No. 9 in the nation, defeated Transylvania (Ky.) and Alma (Mich.) Friday in day one of the Purple Raider Classic.
The Raiders improved to 11-0 with the two wins on Friday as Webb recorded 12 kills in the first match against Transylvania that pushed her into the elite club of 1,000 career kills.
In the 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 24-16, 25-12) win over the Pioneers, junior Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) matched Webb with 12 kills to lead the Raiders as sophomore Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) chipped in with eight kills. Juniors Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) and Brittany Woodard (Diamond/Southeast) tallied 27 assists and 13 assists, respectively, while fellow junior Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) had a game-high 22 digs as Snyder chipped in with 13 on the night.
The 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-15, 25-16) of the Scots, moved the Raiders to a perfect 11-0 on the season which is the longest win streak since a 14-0 start to the 2000 season. Webb led the Raiders with 10 kills, Schleich added 14 assists for Mount Union, Mastroine tallied a game-high 23 digs and Snyder notched 10 digs.
Mount Union takes on Hanover (Ind.) at 10:30 a.m. and Bethany at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the MAAC.
