STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Mount Union men's tennis team opened its 2013-14 season with a 5-4 win Friday at Franciscan.

Mount Union is 1-0 while Franciscan drops to 0-2.

The Purple Raiders won three of the six singles matches and won two of the doubles matches.

In the number two doubles match, Ben Swope (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) and Malcolm Leake (Fremont/Fremont Ross) defeated Zachary Quiza and Brian Robau 8-4. While Jeff Williams (Cleveland Heights/St. Edward) and Chase Krammel (Tallmadge/Archbishop Hoban) defeated David Freytag and Joseph Staniszewski 8-0 in the the three spot.

The Barons would take the first three matches in singles action. It would be Rob DeMarco (North Canton/Hoover) who would get the ball rolling for the Raiders when he defeated Brian Robau (6-1, 6-1). Followed by, Dominic Marino (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls) defeating Joseph Staniszewski (6-0, 6-0). 

It would be freshman Jeff Williams in the fifth position that would clinch the match for the Raiders, when he defeated David Freytag (3-6, 6-4, 6-1). 

Mount Union's next match is set for 3:30 p.m. in Erie, Pa. against Penn State-Behrend
