Men's Basketball: Gillespie Leads Mount Union to Ninth Straight Win; Raiders Stay in First Place in OAC

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union senior T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/Toledo St. John's) hit a free throw with 0.8 seconds left to send the Purple Raiders to a 73-72 Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball win against Marietta Wednesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders (11-2, 6-0 OAC) win their ninth straight game and remain alone in first place in the OAC.

Gillespie finished with a game-high 21 points -- one off his career-high -- while sophomore Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) had 10 of his 15 points in the second half as the duo led Mount Union.

Andy Dollman came off the bench with 16 points to lead four in double digits for Marietta (10-4, 5-2 OAC).

Mount Union fell behind early trailing by 10 points -- 28-18 with 7:43 left in the first half, but the Raiders finished the period on a 16-4 surge to lead 34-32 at the break.  Gillespie had 13 points in the first half.

The Raiders opened the second half on a 19-9 run capped by a Jeff Foreman (Mentor/Mentor) three-pointer to lead 53-41 with 10:57 to play.

Mount Union led 60-50 with 6:22 to play when Marietta rallied with a 17-7 run to tie the game at 67 with 1:10 left to play.

Dillon then hit a three pointer, Luis Garcia made two free throws for Marietta to make the Mount Union lead 70-69 before Dillon hit two free throws to put the Raiders up three, 72-69.

Garrett Stephenson tied the game with a three-pointer with 13 seconds left, Gillespie took the ball and drove to the basket drawing a foul with 0.8 seconds left.

After making the first, he intentionally missed the second to end the game.

Mount Union next hosts Wilmington Saturday at 3 pm at The MAAC.
