Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio - The No. 7 Mount Union volleyball team started their Ohio Athletic Conference season with a 3-0 win over visiting Capital but lost to the nation's top ranked team Hope (Mich.) in a Saturday double-header in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders (18-2, 1-0 OAC) rolled past Capital with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-15 straight-set victory.
Mount Union was led by Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) who had 14 kills with only three attack errors. Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) and Brittany Woodard (Diamond/Southeast) both had 16 assists to lead the Raiders.
Capital was led by Courtney McCracken with five kills and 14 digs.
In the second game Mount Union was defeated by Hope 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 in a battle of nationally ranked teams.
The Raiders led in each of the three sets but long runs gave the momentum back to the Flying Dutch and ultimately enough room to close out the game.
Snyder had nine kills, Schleich led the team with 28 assists and Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) added a team-high 14 digs.
Hope (19-0 overall), who was led by Jenna Grasmeyer's 16 kills, remains the only undefeated team in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll.
The volleyball team is back in action on Tuesday (October 14) at 7:00pm against Marietta on the road in Marietta, Ohio.
