Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - No. 12 Mount Union was defeated by No. 4 Wittenberg 25-14, 25-14, 12-25, 25-18 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday in the Pam Evans Smith Arena.
The Purple Raiders end their season with a 29-6 record.
Mount Union was led by Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) with 13 kills. Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) added 10 kills for the Raiders.
Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) paced the Raiders with 22 assists while Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) led the team with 20 digs.
Wittenberg was led by Kendall Farmer with 11 kills and Kara Seidenstricker with 10 kills.
In the first set Mount Union and Wittenberg were tied at 7-7 before the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-7. Wittenberg added to its lead with a 5-0 later in the set.
The second set was broken open by a Wittenberg 9-0 run fueled by four Tiger service aces. Mount Union could not cut into the deficit and lost the set by 11 points.
The Raiders jumped out to an 8-1 lead in set number three and led by as many as 13 to win the set.
The fourth and final set saw the Raiders take an early 10-6 advantage only to have the Tigers go on an 8-1 run to take the lead 14-11. Mount Union would not get closer than two points the rest of the set.
Wittenberg will move on to play Hope (Mich.) for the Great Lakes Regional Championship tomorrow at 7:00pm.
