Men's Basketball: Jackson's Career-High Leads Mount Union in Win Over Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Sophomore guard DeAllen Jackson's (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) scored a career-high 21 points and led Mount Union to a 94-73 win over Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders (4-2, 3-0 OAC) had three others in double figures on the night. Senior guard Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) scored 15 points and is now only six points away from reaching 1,000 points in his career.

Also in double figures for Mount Union was junior forward Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) with a dozen points and junior guard Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) with 10 points off the bench.

Otterbein (1-6, 0-3 OAC) was led by Jake Phillis with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Mount Union got off to a slow start and trailed by as many as seven points, 16-9, six minutes into the first half. The Raiders continued to trail halfway through the first half before they went on an 8-2 run to tied the score at 26-26 with 8:24 to play in the period.

The game was tied again at 33-33 and at 35-35 before freshman guard JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) put together his own 5-0 run to take a 40-35 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. The Raiders led by seven, 43-36, going into the lockerroom.

The Raider scored 14 of the first 17 points starting the second half to balloon the lead to 18, 57-39, with 15:41 left to play in the game. The Cardinals cut the lead to 13 points but was met by a 9-0 Mount Union which gave the Raiders their largest lead of the game at 75-53.

Once again Otterbein rallied to cut the lead down to 12 with four minutes to play only to be answered by a 6-0 Raider run to close out the game.

The men's basketball team is next in action on Tuesday, December 16 as they host Capital in an OAC matchup in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
