Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio -- No. 10 ranked Mount Union may have lost its first set of the season but the Purple Raiders swept a pair of matches beating Lawrence (Wis.) 3-0 and Bethany (W.Va.) 3-1 Saturday at the Purple Raider Classic at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
Against Lawrence, Mount Union jumped out early with a 25-7 win in the first set and took a commanding 2-0 lead with a 25-15 win in set two before completing the sweep with a 31-29 marathon set three. Senior Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) had a game-high 13 kills, fellow senior Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) had 24 assists while senior Lauren Mastroine had 15 digs.
In the Bethany match, the Raiders got 25-21 and 25-22 wins in the first two sets, before the Bison took the third set 25-21. Mount Union finished off the match with a 25-23 win in set four. Junior Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) had 14 kills, Schleich had 28 assists while Mastroine had 25 digs.
Snyder and Mastroine were both named to the all-tournament team.
Mount Union plays a tri-match against Adrian (Mich.) and Alma (Mich.) Friday, Sept. 5 in Adrian, Michigan.
