Men's Basketball: Ruffin Ties Career-High in Win Over Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Junior forward Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) tied his career-high with 31 points as Mount Union earned an 80-76 Ohio Athletic Conference win at Capital, Saturday in Columbus.

Ruffin's other 31 point game came on Dec. 29, 2013 in a 104-79 victory over Olivet (Mich.).

Against Capital he scored his 31 points on 10-of-14 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Ruffin also led the team with nine rebounds.

Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) fouled out with 13 points and seven rebounds while DeAllen Jackson (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) and Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) just missed double figures with nine points each.

Capital (5-12, 3-9 OAC) was led by Ben Danhoff with 19 points off the bench.

The Purple Raiders started the game with a three-pointer by Ruffin and never trail the rest of the way. Four minutes into the game the Raiders led 11-4 and led 24-11 after nine minutes of play.

A Scelza layup gave the Raiders their largest lead of the half, 41-27, with 1:14 left before half. Capital scored the last basket of the half and Mount Union led by a dozen going into the locker room.

The Crusaders opened the second half with a 10-3 run to cut the lead to five with 15:34 left in the game. Later in the half Capital went on a mini 6-0 run to tie the game at 49-49 with 10:39 remaining. After the tie Mount Union scored eight of the next 10 points to take a six point lead.

Mount Union got a pair of three-pointers from Scelza and a triple from Ruffin in the last five mintues of the game to hold onto the lead. Ruffin scored the Raiders last six points to cap off his career night. 

The men's basketball team next plays at home against Muskingum on Wednesday, February 4 at 7:30 pm in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
