Men's Basketball: Purple Raiders Close Regular Season With Win Over Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Mount Union's men's basketball team closed their regular season schedule with a 74-71 Ohio Athletic Conference win over Wilmington on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders (19-6, 15-3 OAC) were led by Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) with a game-high 17 points, DeAllen Jackson (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) with 14 points and Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) with 10 points.

Wilmington (11-13, 8-10 OAC) was led by Jonathan Bibbs with 14 points. Christian Jones added 12 points off the bench in the loss.

Early in the first half the game was tied 6-6 before Wilmington scored eight straight points to lead 14-6 with 15:14 to go in the half. The game changed hands when Mount Union ripped off a 19-2 run capped off by a Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) and one dunk.

The Quakers closed the gap to two points with a 7-0 run but the Raiders fired back but hitting a pair of three-pointers before the half. Eight different Mount Union players tallied points in the first half and the Raiders led 39-31 at the break.

In the second half Wilmington cut the lead to just one after back-to-back three pointers. Mount Union by only two, 49-47, with 12:51 to play until a Griffin three-pointer and a Jacubec three-pointer sandwiched a pair of Quaker free throws to increase the lead to seven, 49-56.

During the last five minutes of the game Wilmington cut the lead to three points on two separate occasions. On both occasions the Raiders got a clutch three-pointer, one by Jackson and one by Dillon.

With less than a minute to play Mount Union led 73-71 and Ruffin was sent to the free throw line fro two shots. Ruffin connected on one of two shots and the Quakers missed on a last second three-point which would have tied the game.

The men's basketball team will host the first round of the OAC Tournament on Tuesday at 7:30 pm in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance. Their opponent is yet to be determined.
