Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio - Mount Union's men's basketball team cruised past Ohio Northern 101-82 in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders (20-6 overall) were led by a Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) with a game-high 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Michael Shull (Massillon/Massillon Jackson) came off the bench to score 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers), Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) and JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) just missed double figures with nine points each.
Ohio Northern (12-14) was led by Lucas Pennington with 21 points. Isaiah Roux and Konner Baker both scored 10 points in the loss.
Ruffin started the game off with a two-handed dunk and Mount Union made 8-of-11 from three-point to build a 35-14 lead with 7:37 left in the half.
The Polar Bears tried to claw back into the game with a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 14 points. Jacubec then hit back-to-back three-pointers and Scelza added another to take their biggest lead of the half, 23 points, at 47-24. The Raiders led 49-28 at the break.
The Raiders slowly increased their lead in the second half, topping out at a 30-point advantage, 70-40 with 13:12 left in the game. Ohio Northern came within 17 points with 3:13 remaining but could get no closer.
The men's basketball team will travel to John Carroll on Thursday to take on the Blue Streaks at 8:00 pm. This will be the second time in eight days that these two teams have played each other in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights.
