ALLIANCE, Ohio -- No. 4 seed Mount Union held off No. 5 seed Baldwin Wallace 5-3 in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Tuesday at Mount Union's Whitehill Tennis Courts.
The Purple Raiders (14-5) advance to a semifinal match against top seeded John Carroll, a 5-0 win over No. 8 seed Marietta, Friday at 1 p.m. at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
The Raiders took two of three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead.
Freshman Jackson Schneider (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) got Mount Union a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to extend the lead to 3-1.
Baldwin Wallace (15-6) grabbed a win at No. 3 singles to narrow the margin to 3-2 but the Raiders quickly got the point back when sophomore Jeff Williams (Cleveland Hts./Lakewood St. Edward) scored a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
The Yellow Jackets would score a three-set win at No. 6 singles to close within 4-3 and the final two singles points were in the third set before sophomore Rob DeMarco (North Canton/Hoover) closed out the match with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
