Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – No. 19 ranked Mount Union suffered its first Ohio Athletic Conference loss of the season with a 116-93 defeat at No. 7 ranked John Carroll Saturday afternoon.
Mount Union falls to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in the OAC and hosts No. 10 ranked Marietta next Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Alliance to wrap up the first half of the league schedule.
John Carroll stays perfect on the season at 15-0 and 8-0 in the OAC.
The Purple Raiders were led by J.J. Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) with a game-high 22 points and 7 rebounds, while Mount Union had three other players in double figures as Jake Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) scored 15, Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) with 14, Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) added 12, and Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) scored 10.
The Blue Streaks had seven players in double figures and was led by Ryan Farragher with 21 points. Simon Kucharowicz added 17 points of his own, while Doug Caputo added 14 with a game-high 12 rebounds and Will Starks had 12.
Mount Union scored six of the game's first eight points and led 6-2 in the game's opening two minutes but John Carroll would go on a 20-7 run over the next five minutes capped by back-to-back three's from Danny Wallack and Will Starks to lead 22-13. The Blue Streaks would stretch that lead to as many as 14 points leading 52-38 at the break.
Mount Union got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
John Carroll was dominant on the glass, out-rebounding the Raiders, 56-29.
