Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- An ice cold shooting first half was too much for a furious second half rally as No. 18 ranked Mount Union lost to No. 11 ranked Marietta, 98-85 in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders (11-5 overall, 7-2 OAC) were down 23-3 to start the game and trailed 53-20 at the half as Mount Union was just 8-of-35 shooting (22.9-percent) in the first half.
Marietta (14-2, 8-1 OAC) hit nine three-pointers in the first half and an Eddy Grenert three-pointer with 15:40 to play gave the Pioneers a 36-point lead at 63-27.
Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow) then hit seven three-pointers the rest of the way as the Raiders cut the deficet to 12 points 97-85 before falling 98-85. Over those last 15 minutes, Mount Union out-scored Marietta 58-35.
Scelza and JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) each came off the bench to lead Mount Union. Scelza finished with a game-high 27 points on a school single-game record nine three-pointers while Kukura added 11 points.
The Pioneers were led by Luis Garcia with 24 points and A.J. Edwards, who had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Mount Union next plays Otterbein in an OAC game Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Rike Center in Westerville.
