Women's Basketball: Mount Union Rallies to Defeat Marietta; Suzy Venet Gets Career Win No. 200

MARIETTA, Ohio – Mount Union's women's basketball team defeated Marietta 64-61 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Wednesday at the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta.

The Purple Raiders improve to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the OAC while the win was career win No. 200 for head coach Suzy Venet.  Venet, who played at Mount Union from 1994-98, has 189 wins with the Raiders and 11 in one year as the head coach at Manchester (Ind.).

Annie Bova (Parma Heights/Beaumont) had a game-high of 29 points and Bella Pecchia (North Ridgeville/North Ridgeville) added 12 points to lead the Raiders.

The Pioneers (9-7, 3-6 OAC) were led by Corrie Burkhardt who had 16 points and nine rebounds.

The first half of the game featured six ties and six lead changes and Marietta would go on an 8-3 run to finish the second quarter and lead Mount Union 33-28 going into the half.

Marietta scored the first four points of the third quarter to extend its lead to 37-28 before Mount Union went on an 11-3 run to retake the lead 47-42 at the end of the period.

A jumper from Pecchia and a three-pointer from Bova to start the fourth quarter pushed the lead to 52-42.  Marietta would anwser with a 17-6 run to lead 59-58 with 3:23 left to go. 

Bova and Pecchia each went two-of-two from the line in the final two minutes as the Raiders scored six of the final eight points to get the win.

Mount Union hosts Otterbein Saturday, Jan.10 at 3 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
