Men's Basketball: Mount Union Makes Comback to Edge Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio -- Senior Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow) hit a free throw with a under a second left as the Mount Union men's basketball team rallied from a double-digit second half deficit to defeat Baldwin Wallace, 80-79 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Wednesday in Berea.

The Purple Raiders improve to 13-5, 9-2 in the OAC while Baldwin Wallace falls to 10-8, 5-6 in the OAC.

Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) led the Raiders with a season-high 29 points and a career-best 19 rebounds, giving him his sixth double-double of the season.

Aside from Ruffin, Mount Union had two other players in double figures with JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) scoring 25 and DeAllen Jackson (Akron/Acrhbishop Hoban) adding 13 points.

Cam Kuhn led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points, while Jay Battle, Brandon Glein, and Jake Fetherolf all added 12 points each

In the first half, BW jumped out an early 9-4 lead at 16:45 when Zack Brandy hit a three-pointer. After Mount Union scored eight straight points to take the lead 12-9 at 15:06, BW went on an 11-1 run to regain the lead. The Yellow Jackets would lead by as much as 14. BW kept their lead for the rest of the half, leading 44-33 at halftime. Ruffin led the Raiders in the half with 13 points and six rebounds.

BW would hold on to their double digit leading in the early stages of the second, with Fetherolf extending their lead to 15 with two made field goals in the first 1:30. Mount Union began to narrow the deficit, shortening the lead to eight off a three pointer by Jackson with 17:09 remaining in the game. Jackson's three pointer sparked 19-12 run, where a dunk by Ruffin brought the Raiders within one.

The Raiders would gain their first lead of the half, 79-77, off a jumper by Ruffin. BW would tie the game with Zach Warner and Mike Peters each making a free throw. With two seconds remaining in the game, Scelza would get fouled and sink one of his two free throws with less than a second left to close out the win.

Mount Union is back in action on Saturday as they Raiders host Capital for Coaches for Cancer Week. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at The MAAC.
