Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's volleyball team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Ohio Northern Saturday, October 1st at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders (11-5) lost to the Polar Bears (16-3) in straight sets 25-15, 25-23, and 25-22. Three Raiders each posted six kills including senior Caitlyn Synek (Independence/Independence), junior Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) and sophomore Mary Beth Keck (Strongsville/St. Joseph Academy). Keck also added six blocks for Mount Union.
The Raiders and the Polar Bears started off the match having three ties in the first five points of the set. Mount Union then went on a 4-0 run with senior Kelly Johnson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) serving. Ohio Northern went on their own 7-0 run leading the Raiders 13-9. The Polar Bears kept their lead throughout the match and went on an 8-0 run at 17-15 to finish out the first set, 25-15.
In the second set, the Raiders came out strong leading the Polar Bears 7-3. Ohio Northern slowly caught up to Mount Union tying the set at 8-8 and taking a two point lead, 10-8 until Mount Union called a time out. The Polar Bears kept the lead throughout the middle of the set, leading the Raiders 19-14. Mount Union went on a 7-3 run to catch up to Ohio Northern, 23-21. With kills by Keck and sophomore Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) the Raiders were one point behind the Polar Bears, 23-24. Ohio Northern finished set two with a kill.
The Raiders led the Polar Bears by three points, 8-5, in the beginning of third set. Ohio Northern tied it up at 8-8 and took a two point lead on the Raiders 10-8. Mount Union would tie up the game at 10-10 but Ohio Northern took back to lead to go up 15-12. The Raiders came back with a 6-3 run tying up the game 18-18. The Polar Bears took back the lead, and kept it the rest of the way defeating the Raiders 25-22.
