Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio - Mount Union's volleyball team defeated Capital Saturday, October 15 at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio.
Mount Union (14-6, 3-2 OAC) defeated Capital (5-18, 1-4 OAC) in four sets 25-15, 21-25,25-23 and 25-13. The Purple Raiders were led by senior Caitlyn Synek (Independence/Independence) and junior Brooke Knollman (Powell / Olentangy Liberty) who each tallied nine kills while juniors Morgan Chapman (Seven Fields, Pa/Seneca Valley) and Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) each had eight and seven kills respectively.
Junior Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) led in assists with 20 as senior Kelly Johnson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) added 17 assists.
Freshman Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) led the defense with a season high of 34 digs.
In the first set, the Raiders stared off strong leading the Crusaders 11-3. Mount Union did not let Capital come within seven points of them throughout the set. The Raiders had a hitting percentage of .257 with 14 kills while the Crusaders only hit a .086 with seven kills.
Mount Union pulled for a four point lead early in the second set, 10-4 with help from Johnson who had a 6-0 serving run. The Crusader then came within one point of the Raiders, 13-12 and kept it a close couple of points. Capital tied the game up and pulled for a 16-15 lead. There were three ties until at 18-18, the Crusaders went on a 3-0 run to make the score 20-19. Capital kept their small lead the rest of the way winning 25-21.
The third set started off with five ties early having the score tied, 7-7. Mount Union pushed for a three point lead, 10-7 but the Crusaders came right back in it going on a 4-0 service run leading the Raiders 12-10. Capital kept their lead up to four points until a 7-0 service run from Schenk brought Mount Union back in the lead, 23-21. The Crusaders tried to pull ahead, but a kill by Sliman and an error for the Crusaders got the Raiders the win, 25-23.
The fourth set started off close with four ties, with the last tie at 6-6. Johnson came into the game with a 9-0 service run to put the Raiders up 13-6. Mount Union did not look back as they kept a large lead on Capital. The Raiders did not trail the rest of the game and defeated the Crusaders 25-13. Capital only had seven kills in the fourth set while Mount Union dominated at the net with four blocks.
Mount Union hosts Muskingum Tuesday, October 18 at 7:00 PM in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio.
