Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio - Mount Union's volleyball team dropped a four set match to non-conference opponent Ohio Wesleyan Friday, October 21 at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio.
Mount Union (15-7, 3-2 OAC) lost to Ohio Wesleyan (15-10, 4-3 NCAC) in four sets 25-19, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-23. The Purple Raiders were led by junior Brooke Knollman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) who tallied 13 kills and four blocks on the night while senior Caitlyn Synek (Independence/Independence) added 12 kills and two blocks.
Junior Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) led the defense and had a career high of 20 digs while sophomore Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) added 18. Junior Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) led in assists with 25.
The first set consisted of seven ties in the beginning of the set up to 8-8. Ohio Wesleyan took a four point lead, 14-10, over Mount Union. The Raiders came back within two points from a 3-0 service run from senior Kelly Johnson (McMurray, Pa./St. Peters Township) to put the score at 15-13, but the Battling Bishops kept the lead the rest of the way taking the first set from the Raiders 25-19.
The Bishops started off the second set with a 4-1 lead and pushed to keep a lead till the Raiders tied it up at 8-8. Ohio Wesleyan took the lead back and got up to a four point lead, 15-11. With a 3-0 service run by Sliman and a kill by Schenk, the Raiders tied it up at 16-16. There were six ties within the next 11 points until Mount Union pulled for a lead with kills by Sliman and Synek. Junior Morgan Chapman (Seven Fields, Pa/Seneca Valley) ended the set with two kills, 25-22.
The third set started off close, until a 4-0 service run by Ohio Wesleyan put them up 7-4. The Raiders could not get back in the game as the Battling Bishops led the rest of the way taking the third set from Mount Union 25-16.
Mount Union and Ohio Wesleyan battled in the fourth set with six ties and five lead changes. The Raiders kept a one point lead on the Battling Bishops at the 8-7 mark. Another tie, 9-9 put the Battling Bishops back on top by one point. Ohio Wesleyan took a five point lead with a 5-0 service run, 15-10. The Battling Bishops kept their lead until the Raiders tied it up at 19-19 with four kills while Ohio Wesleyan tabbed four errors. The Battling Bishops took their small lead back and pulled out the rest of the set having five kills in the last five points.
Mount Union travels to Wilmington tomorrow Saturday, October 22 for an Ohio Athletic Conference match up at 1:00 PM.
