Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio - No. 3 seed Mount Union lost to No. 2 seed Heidelberg in a four-set match Thursday in the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament in Tiffin, Ohio.
Mount Union (19-9) lost to Heidelberg (23-8) in four sets 12-20, 25-17, 22-25 and 21-25.
Sophomore Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) hit her 1,000 career dig leading the defense with 24 digs. Celia Barrett (University Heights/Hathaway Brown) and Morgan Chapman (Seven Fields, Pa/Seneca Falls) each added 11 digs on the night.
Offensively, the Purple Raiders were led by Brooke Knollman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) with 14 kills and 5 blocks while Caitlyn Synek (Independence/Independence) tabbed 10 kills on the night.
Kelly Johnson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) led in assists with 16 while Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) was right behind her with 15.
The Raiders struggled in the first set losing 25-12 but came out determined in the second set with a 7-3 start. Mount Union kept a three point or more lead on Heidelberg with 15 kills, a hitting percentage of .294 and added four blocks to take the second set 25-17.
Heidelberg went ahead 8-2 in the third set but the Raiders didn't allow them to keep that large of a lead tying the set at 15. Mount Union pushed for a one-point lead, 16-15, with help from Barrett who had a four point service run. Four ties pushed the Student Princes to take a four point lead over the Raiders, 23-19. Heidelberg finished out the set 25-22.
The fourth set started off strong for the Raiders as they went ahead 4-1. Mount Union pushed for a five point lead over Heidelberg, 10-5, early in the set. Heidelberg brought the set within two points, 15-13, but a kill by Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) sparked a small run for Mount Union to lead 17-14. The Student Princes tied the game at 19 to then take a 20-19 lead over the Raiders. Heidelberg kept their lead to take the fourth set 25-21.
