Women's Basketball: Mount Union Gets Big For First OAC Win of Season

ALLIANCE, Ohio - Mount Union outscored John Carroll 38-20 in the paint and grinded out an 86-76 overtime win against John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Wednesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

The Purple Raiders (4-3, 1-1 OAC) were led by forwards in sophomore Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) and junior Erin White (West Chester/Lakota East), who each recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds.

White posted 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Sanborn followed with 16 points and 12 boards as Mount Union out-rebounded John Carroll 57-40.

Three more Raiders hit double digits as Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) had 16, Abbey Bartoszewicz (Wexford, Pa./Venetian Academy) had 13 and Cassie Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) had 10.

Katlyn Spahar led John Carroll (2-4, 0-1 OAC) with a game-high 26 points.

Mount Union was down 57-51 with a minute to play in the third quarter and trailed 57-52 to start the fourth.

The Raiders scored eight of the first nine points of the period to take a 60-58 lead when Haley Roddy (Medina/Highland) hit a jumper with just over six minutes to play.

Morrissette would extend that lead to four, 63-59 on the Raiders next possession but the Blue Streaks would out score Mount Union 10-6 to tie the game at 69-69 at the end of regulation.

Mount Union opened overtime with four straight points as Bartoszewicz hit a three and a Sanbornn free throw to make it 73-69, but the Streaks rallied with a hoop and free throw from Camille Adelman to make it 73-72.

Anna Alkire (Massillon/Jackson) then nailed a three-pointer that sparked an 8-0 run and put the Raiders up for good.

Mount Union next takes on No. 19 in the nation Ohio Northern Saturday, Dec. 10 in an OAC game at 3 p.m. in Ada.
