Men's Basketball: Mount Union Beats Heidelberg to Advance to OAC Semifinals

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 3 seeded Mount Union men's basketball team defeated the No. 6 seed Heidelberg, 102-96, in a quarterfinal game of Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

The Purple Raiders (18-8) advance to the semifinal round to play No. 2 seed John Carroll -- an 83-71 winner over Capital -- Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m in University Heights.

Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) had a game-high 23 points to lead six Mount Union players in double figures.

The Raiders other five players in double figures were Jake Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) adding 19, Taylor Moore (North Canton/Hoover) scored 15, Andrew Francesconi (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) contributed 13, Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) chipping in 11 while JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) came off the bench and finished with 10 points.

Heidelberg (14-12) was led by Marquice Taylor with 20 points, while three other players put up double figures.

In the first half, the Raiders took the first command, jumping out to an early 11-7 in the first four minutes of play. Heidelberg gained its first lead of the contest, 13-12, with 15:20 left in the first half. Early offensive production from both teams only allowed a lead of no more than four points until a layup and three pointer by Francesconi extended Mount Union's lead to seven, 36-29, with 8:32 remaining in the half. The first half saw four total lead changes, but Mount Union led 59-46 at the half. Ruffin led all scorers at the break with 14 points.

The Raiders sustained its lead in the early stages and gained its biggest lead of the game of 15, 76-61, with 13:26 remaining in the game off a three-point play by Moore. Heidelberg went on a 28-16 run to cut the deficit down to three, 92-89, with 3:10 remaining in the game.  Mount Union led 93-90 with 2:26 to play when Kukura scored a hoop and was fouled then converted the free throw to push the lead back out to six points as the Raiders held on for the win.
