Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- No.25 Mount Union defeated Ohio Northern, 89-83, in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday. The Raiders improve to 15-5, 11-2 in the OAC, while ONU falls to 9-12, 6-8 in the OAC.
Jake Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) led the Raiders with a game-high 25 points. The Raiders had three other players in double figures, including: Jarrett Ruffin (Northfield/Nordonia) with 16, JJ Kukura (Alliance/Alliance) adding 13, and Cody Dillon (Newton Falls/Newton Falls) finishing with 10.
Ohio Northern was led by Aron Thress, who scored 21 points, while Konnor Baker (13) and Joey DiOrio (12) were also in double figures.
In the first half, ONU jumped out an early 14-2 lead at 14:57 when Devon Allen hit a three-pointer. The Raiders began to chip into the lead, going on a 7-0 run to be within five. With 8:45 remaining in the half, a pair of made three pointers by Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow) and Michael Shull (Massillon/Jackson) would bring Mount Union within three. ONU would follow up that run with a pair of made threes to keep their double-digit lead. The Polar Bears would gain their biggest lead of the half, (16), off two consecutive three pointers by Geise. With a 16-3 run to end the half, the Raiders only trailed by three points, 43-40. Jacubec lead the Raiders in the first half with 14 points.
The second half began with Mount Union earning their first lead of the game, 52-49, off a three pointer by Scelza with 16:21 remaining in the game. The Raiders would sustain their lead throughout the second half, leading by as much as six off a pair of made free throws by Miles Griffin (Massillon/Jackson). Then, with 7:36 remaining in the game, Geise would hit a three to tie the game up at 70-70. A three by Ruffin to regain the lead, 77-74, would start an 11-5 run for the Raiders to extend their lead to six (85-79). ONU would score four unanswered points to come within two with 00:35 remaining. Strong free throw shooting by the Raiders would consolidate the victory.
Mount Union is back in action on Wednesday, January 27 when the Raiders travel to #8 Marietta on Wednesday, February 10. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
