ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union men's tennis team earned its first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season with an 8-1 victory over Marietta Tuesday afternoon at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders, now 9-4, 1-1 OAC, swept doubles play to get off to a great start. Jeff Williams (Cleveland Heights/ Lakewood St. Edward) and Rob DeMarco (North Canton/Hoover) led the Raiders with an 8-1 win at No.1 doubles. The doubles tandem only surrendered 15 points the entire match. Their season doubles record improves to 8-5.
In singles, Mount Union won five of six matches to seal the victory.
Williams earned the fifth point with a win at No.2 singles to give Mount Union the victory. DeMarco also showed a strong performance at No.1 singles, winning in straight sets. He recorded 15 winners and two aces. His first service percentage was 79% for the match, winning 83% percent of his first serve points.
With a 6-3, 6-1 win today, Tyler Tareshawty (Canfield/Canfield) has now won six out of his last seven matches at No.6 singles.
The Raiders are back in action on Saturday, April 9th, as they host Ohio Northern for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
