ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union's volleyball team opened up the 2016 season with a 3-0 victory over Grove City (Pa.) at the Mount Union Invitational Friday night at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

The Purple Raiders (1-0), defeated the Wolverines (0-2) 25-21, 25-17 and 25-11. Senior Caitlyn Synek (Independence/Independence), led the offense with 10 kills and six blocks while juniors Morgan Chapman (Seven Fields, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Mallory Sliman (Amherst/Amherst Steele) each tallied eight kills.

Sophomore Riley Schenk (Amherst/Amherst Steele) dished out 26 assists with senior Kelly Johnson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) adding 10.

Grove City was led by Emma Hartshorn and Laura Buchanana with seven kills each.

Mount Union will compete against SUNY Geneseo at 10:00 AM and #2 Wittenberg at 2:00 PM Saturday, Sept. 2 for their last two matches of the Mount Union Invitational.
