Women's Basketball: Raiders Dropped by John Carroll in Double Overtime

Box Score

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Mount Union women's basketball team faced an 81-75 double-overtime road loss to Ohio Athletic Conference opponent John Carroll Wednesday night.

Mount Union (9-9, 4-7 OAC) was led by Abbey Bartoszewicz (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian Academy) with 15 points and five rebounds.

John Carroll's (5-13, 3-8 OAC) Katlyn Spahar led the Blue Streaks with 26 points and nine rebounds.

A fourth quarter 13-7 run by John Carroll tied an otherwise Mount Union-led game at 55 points with 59 seconds remaining in regulation. A Mount Union foul resulted in two free throws for John Carroll with two seconds left on the clock; the Blue Streaks missed their first free throw but made the second, giving John Carroll a 56-55 lead over the Raiders with one second remaining in regulation.

Junior Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) was fouled in the final second, giving Mount Union two last chances to tie the game or take the lead for the win. Morrissette went one for two on free throws to send the game into overtime with each team sitting on 56 points.

Halfway through the first overtime period, the Raiders led John Carroll by seven points, 65-58. John Carroll scored ten quick points to trail by two, 70-68, with 20 seconds remaining. A last-second layup by John Carroll's Chelbi Graham tied the game at 70 to go into a second overtime period.

An 11-5 run by the Blue Streaks in the second overtime period left Mount Union behind without enough time to catch up, ultimately sealing the win for the Blue Streaks with a final score of 81-75.

The Blue Streaks took an early first quarter lead (7-2) before Mount Union junior Erin White (West Chester/Lakota East) made a layup to start a nine-point scoring run for the Raiders, giving Mount Union an 11-7 edge over John Carroll with 3:31 remaining in the quarter. Sophomores Renee DeFord (Casstown/Miami East) and Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) each made a layup before the end of the quarter, resulting in a 15-11 lead in Mount Union's favor.

Freshman Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland) tallied six points from back-to-back three-point jump shots in the second quarter. Sophomore Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) sunk a three-pointer to make the score 26-24 in the Raiders' favor with just under four minutes remaining in the period. Mount Union and John Carroll each recorded 17 points in the quarter, but the Raiders were able to hang on to a 32-28 lead at the break.

Mount Union led by as many as eight points (49-41) and as few as three (39-36) in the third quarter, outscoring John Carroll 17-15, which was just enough to hold a 49-43 lead as the teams headed into the final 10 minutes of play. John Carroll caught the Raiders in the final quarter of regulation after going on a 13-7 run to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The Raiders play host to OAC opponent Wilmington Saturday, Jan. 28 in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
