Women's Basketball: Raiders Fall to Presidents; Tinkey Named All-Tournament

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Mount Union's women's basketball team fell to Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) 77-74 on Saturday evening from the Kline Center in the championship game of the SpringHill Suites Tournament.

The Purple Raiders (2-1) were led by junior Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) who had 17 points, five rebounds and an assist; Tinkey's performace resulted in her earning All-Tournament honors.

A 10-0 W&J start was stopped by a number of baskets from Tinkey. After being down 22-9, the Raiders were able to chip away at the Presidents as they would go into the second quarter at 30-20. Supported by a 11-3 Mount Union run, the score would be within two as W&J led 33-31. A three-pointer by Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) would tie it up the end the half at 43-43 while Mount Union would shoot 54.5% from the field.

Throughout the second half, the Raiders and Presidents would trade off three-point leads with each other as both teams shot 40.3% on the night. W&J would up their lead to five and would hold it there for the duration of the fourth quarter. A last second layup by Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills/Padua Franciscan) would close the game out at 77-74.

The Raiders will next travel to Allegheny, Pa. to face the Gators on Tuesday, November 21 at 6:00 pm.
