Women's Basketball: Morrissette and Rauhe Lead Raiders to Victory Over The Berg

Box Score

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated the Heidelberg Student Princes (3-6, 1-3 OAC) on Saturday afternoon from the Seiberling Gymnasium with a final score of 91-60.

The Purple Raiders (4-5, 2-2 OAC) were led by senior guard Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands) and freshman guard Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills/Padua Franciscan). Morrissette recorded 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and a season high of four steals. Rauhe also had 17 points, a season and career-high.

Initially, three-point shooting appeared to be the way of offense for both the Student Princes and the Raiders until inside looks gave Heidelberg a four-point lead. Keeping things tight, Mount Union had the opportunity to get ahead of the Berg with back-to-back layups, forcing a timeout. Caitlin Tytler  (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) closed out the quarter with a strong move to the basket, Mount Union would lead 17-15.

Starting the second quarter, Mount Union and the Berg would waver back and fourth with four-point leads over one another. With two minutes to play in the half, Mount Union guards Morrissette and Rauhe would push the offense as a three-point lead became 10 to end the half at 37-27 in favor of the Raiders.

Third quarter, the Princes would come out physical and fast-paced to close in on Mount's lead, cutting it in half at 37-32. Three pointers began to fall more frequently for the Raiders and then consecutive steals for Morrissette would in turn motivate the offense; so much so that the Raiders would go up 66-44 to end the 29-point quarter.

Holding their largest lead of the season would continue for Mount Union. Jump shots would continue to fall for the Berg and they would also receive a number of opportunities at the foul line, but it would not be quite enough to hold off the Raiders. Scoring a team season-high, Mount Union would go on the win the game with a final score of 91-60.

The Mount Union women's basketball team is next in action at Bluffton University's 5th Annual McDonald's Holiday Tournament as they will face the nationally-ranked Hope College Flying Dutch on Friday, December 29 at 12:00 PM.
