Women's Basketball: Purple Raiders Defeated at Marietta Wednesday

Box Score

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Mount Union women's basketball team lost to Marietta 76-62 in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up at Marietta College Wednesday night.

Mount Union (9-11, 4-9 OAC) was led by senior Abbey Bartoszewicz (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian Academy) who recorded 20 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) added 11 points and four rebounds for the Purple Raiders.

Amisha Herd led Marietta (11-9, 5-8 OAC) with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Marietta scored 11 unanswered points in the opening minutes of the game before senior Cassie Hennessy (Lancaster/Lancaster) made a free throw with 2:55 remaining to get the Purple Raiders on the board. Sophomore Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) put up four points from a layup and three free throws to add to Mount Union's 10 first quarter points, but the Raiders trailed Marietta 20-10 at the end of the first period.

Mount Union cut Marietta's lead to just seven points, 37-30, after scoring 20 points in the second quarter. Bartoszewicz sunk two three-pointers, while sophomore Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) and freshman Meghan Hess (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) recorded three-pointers of their own. The Raiders came within three points of Marietta (29-26) when junior Corie Inverso (Danville/Danville) made a jump-shot with 3:54 remaining, but it wasn't enough to spark the run the team needed, leaving Mount Union behind by a score of 37-30 at the break.

The Raiders went on a 12-5 run just five minutes into the third quarter to tie the game at 42 points after Tinkey made back-to-back three-pointers. Marietta responded by going on a 9-2 run to hold a 51-44 lead over Mount Union at the end of the period.

Bartoszewicz recorded four three-pointers and a layup to record 14 of her 20 total points in the final period of play. Her efforts aside, Marietta was able to pull away from Mount Union after outscoring the Raiders 25-18 to secure a 76-62 victory.

The Raiders travel to Columbus, Ohio for their next OAC game against Capital University Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m.
