Women's Basketball: Scott Records Career-High in Raiders Win over Heidelberg

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union women's basketball senior Kelsey Scott (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) recorded a career-high 17 points in the Purple Raiders' 65-60 win over Heidelberg in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Monday night in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. 

Scott led the Purple Raiders (13-13) in points and recorded eight rebounds, while fellow senior Abbey Bartoszewicz (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian Academy) followed with 15 points and two rebounds. 

Heidelberg's (9-17) Theresa Jackson led the Student Princes with 24 points and six rebounds.

In 2016-17, Mount Union swept the regular-season series against Heidelberg, with an 83-68 home win on Dec. 20 and an 84-83 win at Heidelberg on Feb. 11. 

Heidelberg got on the board in the opening minute of the game and led the Raiders by as many as five points, 7-2, with just under seven minutes to play in the first quarter. Mount Union tied the score on two separate occasions before Scott made a layup to give the Raiders their first lead of the game with 2:27 remaining. Mount Union led the Student Princes 13-10 at the end of 10 minutes. 

The second quarter began with a 5-0 run by the Student Princes to tie the game at 15 points 1:17 into the period. Heidelberg led by as many as five points, 20-15, before Bartoszewicz sunk a three-pointer to spark the scoring run Mount Union needed. The Raiders' Scott tied the game at 24 points after making a layup with 4:44 on the clock. Free throws by sophomore Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) and junior Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands), along with two three-pointers by Scott, put the Raiders up by as many as seven points in the quarter. Mount Union led Heidelberg 32-27 at the break. 

Scott tallied six points from two three-pointers in the third period, while senior Cassie Hennessy (Lancaster/Lancaster) and Bartoszewicz recorded three-pointers of their own to add to the Raiders' 20-point quarter. Mount Union saw its largest lead at the 3:41 mark when it led Heidelberg by 15 points, 48-33. The Student Princes cut the Raiders' lead to nine at the end of the quarter, giving Mount Union a 52-43 advantage as the teams headed into the final ten minutes. 

In the final period, Heidelberg went on a 14-6 run to tie the game at 57 points with 1:27 remaining in regulation. A jumpshot by Sanborn, followed by a layup by sophomore Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield), gave Mount Union a 61-57 lead before Heidelberg's Jackson made a three-pointer. Sophomore Anna Alkire closed the game by going four-for-four on free throws to give the Raiders a 65-60 win over Heidelberg. 

Mount Union travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play Wilmington College in the second round of the OAC tournament Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
