Volleyball: Raiders defeat Hiram in Four; Schenk Records a Triple Double

Box Score

HIRAM, Ohio - Mount Union's volleyball team snaps Hiram's (11-4) five-match win streak Tuesday night at the Price Gymnasiuam in Hiram in four sets (25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22).

The Purple Raiders (13-1) were led by freshman Madelin DiBease's (Perry/Perry) 14 kills. Blocking at the net for Mount Union with three a piece was DiBease, sophomore Marlee Peck (Homeworth/Marlington) and junior Mary Beth Keck (Strongsville/St. Joseph Academy). Junior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) tallied 19 digs.

Senior setter Riley Schenk (Lorain/Amherst Steele) recorded a triple double of 32 assists, 11 kills and 10 digs.

During the first set, both teams kept it tight. The Purple Raiders and Terriers tied all the way through 17 until Hiram got a couple key points to build a lead of 20-17. However, it wasn't long until Mount came back and tied it up at 22, going on to win the set 25-23.

Second set, Mount Union led 8-2 to kick things off. A 5-0 run by Hiram and then some made the score 9-9. Mount went on a 6-0 run of their own to make it 15-9 and continued to carry the lead. A service ace by Elise Nickoli (Norwalk/St. Paul) ended the set at 25-17.

The Terriers put together several key blocks and kills to get a quick 4-6 lead over the Raiders. The Raiders wouldn't give in just quite yet, but Terriers kept a solid three point lead throughout. Three soon turned into eight, putting the Raiders down 16-24 at one point. Mount Union got right back in it at 20-24 but a powerful kill by Hiram's Destinee Harris led Mount Union to drop this one 20-25.

Final set, Hiram got out on top early but never led by more than two. The Raiders and Terriers went on to go back and forth for the remainder of the set. A kill by Mary Beth Keck (Strongsville/St. Joseph Academy), followed by a block by DiBease helped put the Raiders on top 21-19. A kill by Schenk settled the score at 25-22.

The Raiders next travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the DoubleTree Invitational at Carnegie Mellon University. Mount Union competes Friday, September 22 against Geneva (Pa.) at 2:00 pm and Wooster at 4:00 pm, then Saturday September 23 against Salisbury (Md.) at 1:00 pm and #13 Carnegie Mellon at 5:00 pm.
