Women's Volleyball: Mount Union Reaches 20 Wins with Victory Over Capital

Box Score

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Mount Union women's volleyball team (20-3, 3-2 OAC) achieved their 20th win of the season in a 3-0 victory against Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Capital (0-21, 0-5 OAC) Saturday afternoon from the McPhearson Academic and Athletic Complex.

An array of Purple Raiders tabbed kills on the afternoon as the team was led by freshman outside hitter Kirsten Powell (Strongsville/Strongsville), sophomore outside hitter Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) and senior middle Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) with six kills a piece. Jackson was strong at the net in more ways than one as she registered five blocks for a team-best.

Setting the team up for success was junior setter Carly Stepic (Cleveland/Holy Name) with 24 assists. On top of assists, Stepic led the group in service aces with a career-high of four. Junior defensive specialist Megan Donegan (Dublin/Dublin Coffman) was right behind her with three.

In her first start as libero, sophomore Annie Leslein (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) logged nine digs as she was accompanied by fellow sophomore defensive specialist Kylie Malone (Wooster/Triway) and Stepic who each chipped in six.

Capital struck first, carrying a 9-5 lead over Mount Union to start the first set of the day. Kills from sophomore outside hitter Madelin DiBease (Perry/Perry) broke down Capital's advantage and soon the two team were tied at 13-13, going point for point. Mount Union then sparked a 12-2 run to seal the win at 25-15 with the final point coming from a Donegan service ace.

With Donegan starting the service rotation in the second set, the Raiders opened with a 9-0 advantage. After that moment, Capital struggled to chip away and get points on the board before Mount Union would win the second set 25-6; the fewest amount of points allowed in any of their sets this season.

To start the third set, Capital came out strong and knotted up the score at 6-6. Mount Union was able to string together a series of four-point runs before taking the lead at 19-9. Five straight points in favor of Capital cut Mount Union's lead to 19-14, however it would not be enough to hold them off as Mount Union would go on to win 25-20.

With the win, Mount Union moves to 3-2 in conference play with four matches remaining. They next travel to Marietta for another OAC match-up on Tuesday, October 16 starting at 7:00 p.m.
