Women's Volleyball: Raiders Blank Quakers on the Road

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Mount Union's women's volleyball team defeated Wilmington (5-15, 0-3 OAC) in straight sets Saturday afternoon from Hermann Court at Wilmington College. 

The Purple Raiders (19-2, 2-1 OAC) were led by freshman outside hitter Kirsten Powell (Strongsville/Strongsville) who logged 10 kills on the day. Setting her up for success was junior setter Carly Stepic (Cleveland/Holy Name) with 33 assists. 

Junior defensive specialist Megan Donegan (Dublin/Dublin Coffman) and senior libero Allison Baird (North Royalton/North Royalton) each tabbed 13 digs for the defense. At the net, senior middle blocker Kyleigh Jackson (Galloway/Westland) led the squad with three blocks.

The Fighting Quakers were led by Karrah Wind's seven kills and Mariella Szrom's five blocks.

In the first set, Wilmington chalked up a 7-4 lead over Mount Union. The Raiders went on to score five straight points that contributed to an 8-2 run before the set was tied at 12 a piece. After that, Wilmington scored just one more point before Mount Union ran away with the set, winning 25-13.

A 7-0 service run by Donegan got the Raiders running in the second set. With three service aces on the day, Donegan leads the team in aces with 32 on the year. Trying to chip away at the lead, Wilmington cut Mount Union's advantage to as little as five, but it could not hold of the Raider offense as they took set number two by a score of 25-14.

Final set, Donegan returned to carry a 7-1 service run over the Quakers with kills from Jackson and sophomore outside hitter Breanna Arnett (Peninsula/Woodridge). With their largest lead of 14, Mount Union sat at 22-8 until a 11-2 Wilmington surge closed in on the lead, making to score 24-19. An unassisted kill from Abby Van Horssen (Blacklick/Gahanna Lincoln) sealed the deal at 25-19, in favor of the Raiders.

Next on the schedule, Mount Union had back-to-back home games, beginning with Muskingum on Tuesday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m.
