Men's Basketball: Raiders Triumph over Quakers for Eighth Straight Victory

WILMINGTON, Ohio—Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Wilmington College by a score of 92-74 in Ohio Athletic Conference competition Saturday afternoon at Hermann Court. The victory marked the eighth straight win for Mount Union on the season. 

The Purple Raiders (8-1, 4-0 OAC) were led by senior Tommy Stenger (North Canton / Hoover) who finished with 22 points, freshman Collen Gurley (Akron/Hoban) chipped in with a season-high 19 points, junior Nathan Bower-Malone recorded 15 points while fellow classmate D'Vontay Friga tallied 14 points.

The Quakers (5-2, 2-1 OAC) were led by DaeShawn Jackson who recorded 27 points.

Both teams started the game trading basket for basket. At the 12:16 mark, Gurley sank back-to-back three-point field goals to give Mount Union a 16-12 lead. A quick 14-2 run for the Purple Raiders saw the Mount Union point margin grow to 29-14 with 7:42 left in the half. The Purple Raiders controlled a 41-28 lead heading into the intermission break.

The Purple Raiders shot 13-of-30 (43.3%) from the floor and a perfect 10-of-10 (100%) from the charity stripe. Wilmington shot 11-of-33 (33.3%) from the field and 2-of-3 (66.7%) from the free throw line.

Mount Union started the second half with back-to-back three-pointers from senior Andrew Francesconi (Tallmadge) and Stenger. With 8:39 left in regulation, Friga converted on a layup to extend the Purple Raider advantage to 69-53. Mount Union connected on another 15-2 run capped off by back-to-back three-point field goals from Gurley and Stenger which widened the lead to 87-64. Mount Union collected the victory by a final score of 92-74.

Mount Union went 15-of-24 (62.5%) from the field while shooting 14-of-18 (77.8%) from the charity stripe. Wilmington shot 12-of-27 (44.4%) and 16-of-19 (84.2%) from the free throw line.

Next up, the Purple Raiders face Heidelberg at home on Saturday, December 15 in a doubleheader with the Mount Union women's basketball team; men tip-off at 3:00 p.m.
