Women's Basketball: Career-Highs All Around as Mount Union Gets Senior Day Victory Over Heidelberg

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated Heidelberg 97-55 Saturday afternoon during Senior Day at the McPhearson Academic and Athletic Complex.

The Purple Raiders (13-10, 10-6 OAC) were led by junior forward Jaime Sanborn (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) as she recorded a career-high of 20 points while securing nine rebounds. Also scoring a career-high of 19 points was senior guard Casey Morrissette (Wakeman/Firelands). Junior guard Rachel Tinkey (Canfield/Canfield) scored in double figures as well with 17 points while recording 10 rebounds for her third double-double this season, second consecutive.

Heidelberg (4-19, 2-14 OAC) was led by Brooke Beamer who came off the bench to score 18 points. 

Mount Union opened the first quarter with a collection of three's coming from Meghan Hess (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley), Tori Rappach (Warren/Howland), Morrissette and Tinkey; Tinkey had four of Mount Union's seven to give her 12 first-quarter points, leading the Raiders to gain a lead of 28-9.

Rappach continued the trend by hitting a deep three in the first possession of the second quarter. Shots began to fall for Heidelberg as they made three striaght unanswered three's making it 33-18 with 7:25 to go. After more three's from Morrissette and Tinkey, Mount Union would be up 39-18 with 5:59 to play, but Heidelberg was able to spark a 12-4 run in those final five minutes, working to break down Mount Union's lead, to trail 45-30 at halftime. 

Heidelberg struck first with a three to get the second half underway, making the score 45-33 at 8:50. Morrissette went on to hit back-to-back three's to bump Mount Union's lead back to 20 at 53-33 with 7:58 to play. Sanborn continued to aid the 20-plus point advantage by scoring 12 of her 20 points in the third quarter alone. Mount Union closed out the quarter ahead 69-44.

A coast-to-coast layup by Sanborn to open the fourth quarter was the first basket un-assisted for the Raiders. Mount Union recorded 25 assists off 26 field goals at the 9:37-mark as they led 71-44. Finishing out the quarter by outscoring Heidelberg 28-11, 16 points of which were inside the paint, Mount Union took home the win with a season-high score of 97-55.

Mount Union will next travel to Berea, Ohio as they take on Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m.
