Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio—Mount Union's men's soccer team started the 2018 season with a non-conference win over Case Western Reserve 1-0 Sunday afternoon from Mount Union Stadium.
Both teams were unable to gain the advantage through the first five minutes of play. At the six minute mark, a foul by Case Western Reserve resulted in a penalty kick for Mount Union. Senior Jesse Tinney (Heidelberg, Pa./Chartiers Valley) found the back of the net to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead. Despite the one goal deficit, the Spartans outshot the Raiders 5-2. Junior Jon Schroeder (Parma/Normandy) recorded one shot on goal while junior Zach Hlas (Medina/Medina) tallied two saves in the half.
The second half picked up where both teams left off with either side unable to find the back of the net. A late corner kick by Case Western was cleared away by the Raider defense giving Mount Union the victory 1-0. The Spartans outshot the Raiders 7-1 in the half with junior goalkeeper Zach Hlas (Medina/Medina) making four saves.
Mount Union hits the road on Wednesday, September 5 as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a non-conference matchup with La Roche. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
