Women's Basketball: Rappach Ties Three Point Record in Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Carnegie Mellon 77-63 Tuesday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Pa. 

The Purple Raiders (6-4, 0-3 OAC) were led by senior Tori Rappach (Warren / Howland), who scored a game-high 27 points with nine three-pointers which matched her own Mount Union and Ohio Athletic Conference single-game record. JThe Raiders also got 15 points from junior Elana Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) and 12 rebounds from sophomore Hailey Peoples-O'Neil (Geneva).

Makayla Filiere lead Carnegie Mellon (4-4) with 19 points and three assists.

The Tartans led 5-0 to start the game but back-to-back three-pointers from Rappach gave Mount Union its first lead of the game 6-5. Carnegie Mellon quickly regained the advantage but another three-pointer from junior Sarah Turley (Sagamore Hills / Nordonia) put the Raiders back on top 9-7. Rappach would hit three more three-pointers in the quarter to lead Mount Union to a 20-16 after the first 10 minutes.

Rappach's sixth three of the game early in the second quarter gave the Raiders a 25-18 lead but Carnegie Mellon responded with an 11-3 run to take a 29-28 lead with 4:21 left in the quarter. The team's traded three-pointers before Mount Union scored eight of the final 10 points of the quarter -- the final five of those from Peoples-O'Neil and the Raiders led 39-34 at the break.

Rappach started the third quarter with a three-pointer that sparked a 14-2 Mount Union that pushed the lead to 53-36 at the 6:38 mark. Carnegie Mellon tried to rally with a 9-3 run that cut the Raiders lead to 11, but another Rappach three started an 8-0 run and Mount Union led 61-45 heading into the final quarter.

The Raiders lead stayed double digits the rest of the way.

Mount Union will take a break for the holidays then come back against Heidelberg in an OAC doubleheader Saturday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. in Tiffin.
