Women's Basketball: Peoples-O'Neil Game Winner Takes Win Streak To Three

ALLIANCE, Ohio - Sophomore Hailey Peoples-O'Neil (Geneva) hit a layup and a free throw with two seconds left that gave the Mount Union women's basketball team a 66-64 win over Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday at Timken Gymnasium.

Peoples-O'Neil finished with 11 points and seven rebounds as Mount Union also got a career-high 20 points from freshman Anika Sweeney (Sylvania / Northview) along with 12 from junior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) as the Raiders won their third straight to improve to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.

Angelia Jackson had 15 points for Otterbein (8-5, 3-3 OAC).

Otterbein led 15-9 after one quarter and took its biggest lead of the game, 28-13 with 5:13 left in the first half. Mount Union rallied with a 9-0 run with three-pointers from senior Hannah Schaefer (Dublin / Dublin Coffman), Rauhe, and Sweeney to bring the score to 28-22 with at the 1:41 mark and the Raiders trailed 31-24 at the break. 

Mount Union chipped away in the third quarter and a late five point run tied the game at 49-49 before Otterbein took a 51-49 advantage into the fourth quarter. 

A Peoples-O'Neil jumper gave the Raiders their first lead in the opening minutes of the game, 53-52 with just over nine minutes to go. Four lead changes happened over the next seven minutes and a Peoples-O'Neil bucket with 2:16 to play gave Mount Union a 63-57 lead. Otterbein scored seven straight points the final two on a Jenna Hoschouer to give the Cardinals a 64-63 lead with 14 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Mount Union got an inbounds play underneath its own basket that went to Peoples-O'Neal for the basket and a free throw for the two point lead. Otterbein did get a shot at the buzzer that went in-an-out to end the game.

Mount Union closes out the first half of OAC action Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. with a game at Marietta.
