Women's Basketball: Raiders Fall to Capital on Senior Night

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Mount Union women's basketball team fell to Capital 65-53 in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up Saturday afternoon at the Timken Gymnasium. 

It was the final regular season home game for the seniors Hannah Schaefer (Dublin / Dublin Coffman), Zanny Sauter (Avon), and student manager Kaela Jackson, as the loss dropped the Purple Raiders to 14-11 overall and 8-10 in the OAC. 

Mount Union was led by junior Elena Rauhe (Seven Hills / Padua Franciscan) with a team-high 11 points and four rebounds. 

Cassidy Bosch paced the Crusaders (14-11, 9-9 OAC) with 16 points. 

Mount Union took its first lead of the game 5-2 after a three-pointer from Sauter. Capital bounced back with a 14-2 surge regaining the advantage 16-7. The Crusaders continued to extend their lead with another 7-4 run to end the first quarter, 23-11.

Capital opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to widen its advantage 30-11. Rauhe scored four straight points that sparked a 9-2 run cutting the Crusader lead to 12 points with 2:33 remaining in the half. Capital scored the final three points of the quarter to put the lead back at 15 to head into halftime. 

Schaefer and sophomore Corenna Maynard (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) hit back-to-back three pointers to ignite an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to single digits, 35-28. The Crusaders responded with a 13-4 surge to push their back to lead back to 16 points, 48-32. The Raiders retailiated to end the third period with a 13-6 surge led by junior Sarah Turley (Sagamore Hills / Nordonia) with two trifectas. 

The Raiders cut Capital's lead to one point with an 8-0 run, but the Crusaders quickly responded scoring nine straight points to extend their advantage 63-53 with 1:18 left in regulation. Mount Union was unable to overcome the Capital lead losing the game 65-53.

Mount Union will continue play Tuesday, Feb. 25 in the OAC Tournament traveling to Ada, Ohio taking on Ohio Northern at 7 p.m.
